Staying Human in a World of Devices | Amy Crouch

I lie down and sleep;
    I wake again, because the Lord sustains me.
— Psalm 3:5

More like we wake again because our smartphones wake us up...

Smartphones make a great alarm clock, yes. But they certainly don't sustain us. They actually cannot sustain us. While they can give us access to food delivery and our bank accounts to pay for basic needs, they cannot actually feed us. They can't give us rest.

Our screens are excellent at giving us two things: ease and entertainment.

Neither of these things are bad! But in this ease and entertainment, our screens are also really good at giving us some great distractions. And these distractions can keep us from resting.

BUT! The answer is not throwing our phone into a lake, saying goodbye to screens, and sending all of your texts via carrier pigeon or first class mail.

Jubilee speaker Amy Crouch doesn't think so either. Back in February, she led a workshop on Staying Human in a World of Devices. We certainly want to remain human...sign us up!

“Using easy things and being entertained is not how we become the kinds of people we are called to be by Christ.” —Amy Crouch, Jubilee 2023

At Jubilee 2023, Amy Crouch shared some insights on her own technology use that she has gained over the years (her entire life, really!). She's thought carefully about the role technology plays in her own life and how it helps and also hinders her relationship with others and the Lord. Listen now to hear some certified wisdom and what it look like to live a "tech-wise" life.

If you have one takeaway from this, let it be this: you do not have to throw your smartphone into a lake and say goodbye to screens forever in order to be a faithful follower of Jesus.

As Amy put it, "We want to do the challenging and beautiful work of loving people and loving our God, and we don’t want screens to get in the way.”

Lord, let screens not get in the way of us loving you.

We'll see you soon with more ways to #LiveJubilee
