Creation | Dr. Elissa Yukiko Weichbrodt

God saw all that he had made, and it was very good.
— Genesis 1:31a

Do you consider yourself a maker?
Do you consider yourself a creator?

Do you think about what you were made for? (🎵I used to flooooatttt🎵)

But it is a question worth asking. What were we made for?

Thankfully, we do have something we can point to in order to help us answer that question. We can look to our Creator. We read in Genesis that God created the heavens and the earth. He created the fish, the birds, the plants, the trees. He created the sky and the seas.

He created us—humans. He called us very good. He called upon us to steward His creation. He commanded us to be fruitful and multiply.

But sometimes people kind of miss the point there. That commandment isn’t solely about having children. If we think it’s only that, we’ll actually miss the mark. It’s about participating in God’s creation as co-creators.

At Jubilee 2024, Dr. Elissa Yukiko Weichbrodt encouraged us all to think about what it means for us that God created this world and us in it. She reminded us that we are image bearers of our Creator. And if we bear His image, that means we are creators, too.

And guess what? There really aren’t a ton of boundaries to what can be considered creating.

Elissa reminded us of this: “You are all called to be makers too, and you live into that when you doodle in the margin of your notes. When you make a bowl of mac and cheese. When you learn a dance from Tik Tok. When you code. When you take notes. When you Journal. When you water your house plants. Even when you chose your shoes for today. Those are all acts of creativity and cultivation. Those are part of the goodness of being made a maker.”

Where have you made something new today?

Creation | God says, "You were created to create."

Let’s analyze some art together, shall we? At Jubilee 2024, Elissa shared a painting with us and challenged us to look at it with new eyes. And yes, the kind of obvious metaphor actually does hold up. Just like Clara Peeters created this painting and imbued it with meaning, God did that with us and continues to delight in what he made. Yes, he delights in you.
